TPLSUK Team Returns from Kohla Sonpre Toh Expedition

Updated: May 6

The Kohla Sonpre Toh Visiting Team of Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh UK (TPLSUK) has successfully returned to Pha.Li.Na. Kohinbo, Shaktighat, Ranipauwa, Pokhara, after completing an extraordinary six-day journey of study, exploration, and cultural discovery. Conducted from 19th to 24th April 2026, this remarkable expedition combined physical endurance with a deep spiritual and historical mission—uncovering the legacy of ancient Tamu (Gurung) ancestors.

The journey began with a scenic drive from Pokhara through Lamjung Beshishahar, Dashthar, Ghalegaun, and Bhujung. From Bhujung onward, the adventure truly unfolded as the team embarked on an exhilarating uphill trek into the high hills. With each step, they passed through breath-taking landscapes and eye-catching places—Chhedsyon, Nayusyon, Ghimchesyon, Ghimche Phant, Chilije Pakho, Honjo, and Tayu—where they paused for a refreshing lunch in the middle of the serenity of the jungle.

The dedicated team of 25 participants, supported by 21 assistants, and led by President Capt. (Retd) Dem Bahadur Yoja Tamu, embarked on a journey that tested both strength and determination, challenging their physical endurance and mental resilience. The climb toward Nghasikhu was particularly demanding, with steep ascents under intense sunlight pushing the team to their limits. Every step required immense effort and fatigue set in as the hours passed. Yet, their spirit remained unshaken; encouraging one another through the difficulties, they pressed forward with determination and unity, refusing to give in to the hardships.

By evening, the visiting team reached Nghasikhu, greeted with a sense of accomplishment and relief. They took time to rest, recover and reflect on the challenges they had overcome, while preparing mentally and physically for the next stage of their mission.

The following morning, the team resumed their ascent toward the sacred destination of Kohla Sonpre Toh. Traversing through Rahi Khark, Dhawa, Kohgara, and Thadgu—where they enjoyed a well-earned lunch—the terrain gradually shifted from steep climbs to gentler descents. Energised and inspired, the team pressed on, passing Paanje, Thadgusyon, Panjesyon, Maidapla, and Majhkhon, until at last they arrived at Kohla Sonpre Toh. The moment was unforgettable—faces lit with joy, hearts filled with pride, and a shared sense of accomplishment marking the completion of a challenging high-altitude journey.

As planned, two Khegi gurus and nine additional assistants arrived from Sikles, bringing food supplies for the following day stay at Kohla Sonpre Toh. They welcomed the visiting team with warmth, love and respect. With the group arrived from Sikles, the visiting team grew to 57 members, all of whom spent two nights at this historic and spiritually significant site.

During the stay, Pachyu gurus and Klhepri gurus conducted sacred pooja rituals (Chhyopa, Kyhala Thanso and Hyula Thanso), seeking protection, prosperity, and blessings for safety during the stay and for a safe journey ahead. Beyond the rituals, the visit offered invaluable time and meaningful opportunity to study and reflect on the ancient heritage of the Tamu (Gurung) people, whose ancestors are believed to have lived in harmony and wisdom in this region over 1,300 years ago.

On the fifth day, the team began their return journey toward Sikles. After breakfast at Kohla Sonpre Toh, the visiting team set off downhill with plan to stop for lunch at Sabichoh. Following their lunch at Sabichoh, the visiting team continued on foot for a short distance to the Madi Hydropower House, where transportation had been arranged for the remaining journey to Sikles. The visiting team arrived in Sikles at around 7:00 pm and were warmly welcomed by the local community at Chili Kohinbo, where they stayed for the night.

The following morning brought another warm reception at Namju Chiuli Yunla Kohinbo, where the team shared a final meal before heading back to Pokhara. Upon their arrival at Pha.Li.Na. Kohinbo at approximately 5:00 pm, they were greeted by a large and enthusiastic gathering, including members from the Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh Central Committee, Central Women’s Committee, Central Youth Committee, Kaski District Committee, Central Khegi Committees, Kaski District Women's Committee and representatives from TPLS Hong Kong.

This unforgettable expedition was more than just a journey—it was a powerful reconnection with heritage, a celebration of resilience, and a tribute to the enduring spirit of exploration.
